  1. Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is often identified as an herb especially useful for men, and has been used by health care professionals for promoting prostate health since the mid-19th century. Saw palmetto can help balance testosterone levels within the body and reduce any prostate swelling that may be impeding urine flow. Blood flow may also be slightly restricted with prostate enlargement, which will affect erection. Saw palmetto should be taken in extract form for best absorption. Saw palmetto berries can be taken as well, but it may take up to 4 grams to receive the benefit a 300-milligram tablet will provide. If saw palmetto extract is unavailable, a tea can be made by steeping muslin-covered saw palmetto berries for 10 minutes, then drinking the tea three times daily.

    Horny Goat Weed

This interestingly-named herb is a traditional remedy for sexual dysfunction. Horny goat weed, also called Yin Yang Huo, is chiefly noted for its libido-boosting and stamina enhancing properties, although it can be used to promote overall health. Research has yet to discover exactly how horny goat weed effects libido, but it is theorized that the numerous flavonoids the herb contains promotes nitric oxide, which improves erections. The effects of horny goat weed usually takes up to a week to notice. Standardized extracts should be taken several times per day for the desired effect to be realized, with usual daily doses of up to three grams being reported. Look for products that contain 500 milligrams of horny goat weed extract standardized to 10 percent icariin for best results.

    Muira Puama

Noted for its libido and desire enhancing properties, muira puama is also known as "potency wood." Muira puama has been successfully incorporated into alternative remedies for erectile dysfunction and fatigue. The effects of muira puama are often noticed in mere hours. Muira puama bark capsules should be taken two to four times per day, with most dosages beginning at 200 milligrams per capsule. Muira Puama bark can also be made into a tincture. To make a muira puama tincture, put the herb's bark into a small glass container, covering the pieces of bark with 80- to 100-proof vodka or rum. This mixture should be allowed to infuse for several days with the jar being shaken daily to help enhance infusion. Once the tincture has infused, it should be strained with cheesecloth, then transferred to another jar. Add 10 to 20 drops of the finished tincture to water or another beverage for sexual enhancement or an energy boost.
