Herbs to Treat Erectile Dysfunction

It is a haunting problem for many men that Western medicine often fails to offer a safe and comfortable treatment for erectile dysfunction. Fortunately, ancient herbal medicine, a craft honed as it was practiced for centuries in Eastern cultures, holds some promising alternatives to Western treatment which have proven effective in lab testing as well as in treating real patients.

Saw Palmetto Berry
According to "The One Earth Herbal Sourcebook," by Alan Keith Tillotson et all, saw palmetto has been used for centuries as an herbal treatment for erectile dysfunction. Used by Ayurvedic health professionals as a general health treatment for the male reproductive system, saw palmetto berry has proven effects in improving male reproductive health. It is one of the most effective herbs used to reduce the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, a condition which can affect pelvic blood flow and increase your chances of having erectile dysfunction. Saw palmetto berry is available at most natural food stores in pill or extract form. Chinese herbalists often combine saw palmetto berry with other herbs like stinging nettle when designing a blend to combat erectile dysfunction. These herbs are often mixed with honey and eaten as a paste, but are sometimes drank in a tea.

Tea Tree Oil
Sometimes, erectile dysfunction can be caused by an infection which can cause inflammation or damage to the mechanisms required for an erection. Tea tree oil is an effective antifungal herb. Applied topically, diluted and used as a wash to the genital area, tea tree oil can treat any infections which might be causing inflammation or other problems that affect erectile health. According to "One Earth," tea tree oil works to clear up infections by increasing white blood cell activity in the area of application. "One Earth" suggests using tea tree oil to clear up infections that might be causing erectile dysfunction.

Ashwagandha Root
Ashwagandha root treats erectile dysfunction by giving your sexual energy a boost. A stress-reducing herb which helps strengthen the immune system, the extract of ashwaganda root can have an anti-inflammatory effect which can reduce prostate inflammation and increase your general sexual health. Vascular health is very important in achieving erectile health, because a healthy vascular system is necessary in achieving adequate blood flow to the penis. Prostate inflammation can affect blood flow to the vascular area that facilitates a healthy erection. By reducing inflammation in the prostate area, you can increase blood flow to the pelvic region.

Guduchi Stem
Guduchi stem is a bitter tasting herb which "One Earth" says has antitoxin and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to the healthful effects of guduchi stem, it is also regarded as being an aphrodesiac, and is used to treat impotence in herbal medicine. The dosage suggested in "One Earth" is 2 grams of dried powdered guduchi stem, administered two to three times per day.
